Custom case roadmap

Your recognition roadmap

A practical sequence for understanding whether and how a foreign qualification should be recognised for employment in Germany.

1. Name the intended occupation

Start with the work you plan to do in Germany, not only the title printed on your certificate. Duties, level of responsibility and place of employment help identify the German reference occupation.

2. Determine whether it is regulated

Doctors, nurses, teachers in state schools and certain other professions require official permission or recognition. Many other occupations are non-regulated, where recognition may still help an employer understand a qualification but is not a legal condition for working.

3. Find the competent authority

Responsibility can sit with a chamber, state office or specialist professional body. The Recognition Finder on the federal “Recognition in Germany” portal is a useful starting point, but the selected occupation and work location must be accurate.

4. Read the authority’s own requirements

Typical evidence includes identity, qualification certificates, course content, professional experience and German translations. Requirements differ. Do not commission every possible translation before confirming what your authority asks for.

5. Prepare for possible outcomes

An authority may find full equivalence, partial equivalence or substantial differences. Some regulated professions have compensation measures such as an adaptation period or examination. The exact options depend on the profession and decision.

6. Keep employment and immigration questions distinct

Recognition, permission to use a professional title, residence status and an employer’s hiring decision can interact, but they are not the same procedure. Refer each question to the body authorised to answer it.

Discuss your route with an adviser.
